- <abstract abstract-type="main" xml:lang="en"> <title>Abstract</title> <p>The results of an aromatic <italic>Cope</italic> rearrangement of a <italic>trans</italic>‐1‐aryl‐2‐ethenylcyclobutanecarbonitrile are reported (<italic>Scheme</italic>). The use of this rearrangement for the construction of the fused benzocyclooctene ring system and a preliminary study of the electronic requirements to favor such a transformation are also described.</p> </abstract>
