- <abstract abstract-type="graphical" xml:lang="en"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p> <bold>Versatile precursor to metal complexes</bold>: The lithiated N‐heterocyclic carbene derivative [Li(imino–imidide)(tmeda)] (imino–imidide=4‐(2, 6‐diisopropylphenylimino)imidazol‐2‐ylidenide), obtained by deprotonation and lithiation of a mesoionic 4‐aryliminoimidazolium, serves as a versatile precursor to metal complexes with the anionic 4‐aryliminoimidazolide by salt metathesis. DFT calculations demonstrate that tuneable electronic and steric factors of the substituent at the N<sub><italic>exo</italic></sub> imino function of the heterocycle dictate the preferred site of the metallation (C<sub>NHC</sub> vs. N<sub><italic>exo</italic></sub>).<boxed-text content-type="graphic" position="anchor" orientation="portrait"><graphic position="anchor" mimetype="image" xlink:href="ark:/27927/pgg1pjxkq61" orientation="portrait" xlink:type="simple" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" /></boxed-text></p> </abstract>
