<abstract abstract-type="graphical" xml:lang="en"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p> <bold>The ancestors of RNA?</bold> There is a long‐standing proposal that contemporary nucleic acids might have evolved from RNA‐like polymers that utilized only purine–purine base pairs.
