- <abstract abstract-type="main"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <sec id="hup2365-sec-0001" sec-type="section"> <title>Objective</title> <p>Interleukin‐1 beta (IL‐1β) has been implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. To assess whether the IL1B gene confers increased susceptibility to schizophrenia, we conducted case–control and family‐based studies and an updated meta‐analysis.</p> </sec> <sec id="hup2365-sec-0002" sec-type="section"> <title>Methods</title> <p>We tested the association between IL1B and schizophrenia in 1229 case–control and 112 trio samples using 12 markers, including common tagging single nucleotide variations (SNVs) and a rare non‐synonymous variation detected by resequencing the coding regions. We also performed a meta‐analysis of rs16944 using a total of 8724 case–control and 201 trio samples from 16 independent populations.</p> </sec> <sec id="hup2365-sec-0003" sec-type="section"> <title>Results</title> <p>We found no significant associations between any of the 12 SNVs examined and schizophrenia in either case–control or trio samples. Moreover, our meta‐analysis results showed no significant association between the common SNV, rs16944, and schizophrenia.</p> </sec> <sec id="hup2365-sec-0004" sec-type="section"> <title>Conclusions</title> <p>The present study does not support a role for IL1B in schizophrenia susceptibility.
