- <abstract abstract-type="main" id="fwb12288-abs-0001"> <title>Summary</title> <p> <list id="fwb12288-list-0001" list-type="order"> <list-item> <p>In his paper 'Climate change, nutrient pollution and the bargain of Dr. Faustus', Moss (<italic>Freshwater Biology</italic>, 55, 2010, 175) described the interacting and mutually reinforcing effects of climate change and nutrient pollution on aquatic ecosystems.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>Among other things, Moss (<italic>Freshwater Biology</italic>, 55, 2010, 175) proposed a simple method for determining autotrophic and heterotrophic respiration rates (<italic>R</italic><sub>a</sub> and <italic>R</italic><sub>h</sub>) based on the diel oxygen change technique. Here, we show that one of the assumptions on which the method is based is flawed and that <italic>R</italic><sub>a</sub> and <italic>R</italic><sub>h</sub> cannot be derived mathematically from diel oxygen change curves.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </abstract>
