<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en" id="bjd12580-abs-0002"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p> <bold>What's already known about this topic?</bold> </p> <p> <list id="bjd12580-list-0001" list-type="bullet"> <list-item> <p>Second‐line therapy for eczema includes narrowband ultraviolet B (NB‐UVB) phototherapy on which there is no prospective study in children.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>A randomized controlled trial in adult eczema has shown NB‐UVB to be superior to other phototherapy modalities.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidance 2007 suggests further research into 'phototherapy in children with severe atopic eczema' as it is 'often used…but there are few studies reporting on its effectiveness…'.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> <p> <bold>What does this study add?</bold> </p> <p> <list id="bjd12580-list-0002" list-type="bullet"> <list-item> <p>NB‐UVB resulted in considerable improvement in objective and quality‐of‐life scores in children with moderate‐to‐severe atopic eczema in this comparative cohort study.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>This effect was well maintained up to 6 months post‐treatment.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </abstract>
