Abstract

<abstract abstract-type="main" id="jfb12272-abs-0001"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p id="jfb12272-para-0001">Mechanisms of hybridization between bream <italic>Abramis brama</italic> and roach <italic>Rutilus rutilus</italic> were studied within the native range of the species in a lake in southern Finland. Through the genetic analysis of <italic>A. brama</italic>, <italic>R. rutilus</italic> and putative hybrids, hybridization is shown to have occurred between female <italic>A. brama</italic> and male <italic>R. rutilus</italic>. These results match with previous findings from introduced habitats, suggesting that mating between female <italic>A. brama</italic> and male <italic>R. rutilus</italic> is the predominant mechanism through which the two species hybridize.</p> </abstract>
