While bariatric surgery is becoming increasingly common as an evidence‐based method of treating such patients, it is very invasive and associated with significant risk. There is a need for less invasive endoscopic measures to treat obesity, particularly in patients with comorbidities such as diabetes. Endobarrier is a novel endoscopic technique which can potentially improve metabolic abnormalities such as diabetes and induce weight loss in obese patients with diabetes.

This article reviews the evidence behind Endobarrier, its role in managing obese patients, in particular those with diabetes, and investigates where this device could potentially be used in clinical practice.
