- <abstract abstract-type="main" xml:lang="en"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p>We wanted to test whether <italic>Mollitrichosiphum</italic>, an aphid genus with life cycles on subtropical woody host plants, and <italic>Buchnera</italic>, the primary endosymbiont of aphids, evolve in parallel. We used three aphid genes (mitochondrial <italic>COI</italic>, cytochrome oxidase subunit I and <italic>Cytb</italic>, cytochrome b; nuclear <italic>EF1α</italic>, translation elongation factor 1 alpha) and two <italic>Buchnera</italic> genes (<italic>16S rDNA</italic>; <italic>gnd</italic>, gluconate‐6‐phosphate dehydrogenase) to reconstruct phylogenies. The congruence between the phylogenetic trees of aphids and <italic>Buchnera</italic> was then measured. The results present phylogenetic evidence for the parallel evolution of <italic>Mollitrichosiphum</italic> and <italic>Buchnera</italic> at the intraspecific as well as the interspecific levels. Our results support the possibility of using endosymbiont genes to study host evolutionary history and biogeographical patterns. We also investigated the usability of the <italic>Buchnera gnd</italic> gene as a barcoding marker for aphid identification.</p> </abstract>
