- <abstract abstract-type="main" xml:lang="en"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p>A new 1, 3, 4‐oxadiazole‐containing bispyridyl ligand, namely 5‐(pyridin‐4‐yl)‐3‐[2‐(pyridin‐4‐yl)ethyl]‐1, 3, 4‐oxadiazole‐2(3<italic>H</italic>)‐thione (<italic>L</italic>), has been used to create the novel complexes tetranitratobis{μ‐5‐(pyridin‐4‐yl)‐3‐[2‐(pyridin‐4‐yl)ethyl]‐1, 3, 4‐oxadiazole‐2(3<italic>H</italic>)‐thione}zinc(II), [Zn<sub>2</sub>(NO<sub>3</sub>)<sub>4</sub>(C<sub>14</sub>H<sub>12</sub>N<sub>4</sub>OS)<sub>2</sub>], (I), and <italic>catena</italic>‐poly[[[dinitratocopper(II)]‐bis{μ‐5‐(pyridin‐4‐yl)‐3‐[2‐(pyridin‐4‐yl)ethyl]‐1, 3, 4‐oxadiazole‐2(3<italic>H</italic>)‐thione}] nitrate acetonitrile sesquisolvate dichloromethane sesquisolvate], {[Cu(NO<sub>3</sub>)(C<sub>14</sub>H<sub>12</sub>N<sub>4</sub>OS)<sub>2</sub>]NO<sub>3</sub>·1.5CH<sub>3</sub>CN·1.5CH<sub>2</sub>Cl<sub>2</sub>}<sub><italic>n</italic></sub>, (II). Compound (I) presents a distorted rectangular centrosymmetric Zn<sub>2</sub><italic>L</italic><sub>2</sub> ring (dimensions 9.56 × 7.06 Å), where each Zn<sup>II</sup> centre lies in a {ZnN<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub>} coordination environment. These binuclear zinc metallocycles are linked into a two‐dimensional network through nonclassical C—H...O hydrogen bonds. The resulting sheets lie parallel to the <italic>ac</italic> plane. The Cu<sup>II</sup> centres adopt a distorted square‐pyramidal CuN<sub>4</sub>O coordination environment with apical O atoms. The chains in (II) are interlinked <italic>via</italic> two kinds of π–π stacking interactions along [0<inline-graphic xlink:href="ark:/27927/pgg3hbw7g4b" mimetype="image" xlink:type="simple" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" />1]. In addition, the structure of (II) contains channels parallel to the crystallographic <italic>a</italic> direction.
