<abstract abstract-type="main" id="age2377-abs-0001"> <title>Summary</title> <p>In this study, we performed a sequence characterization of the duck <italic>melanocortin 1 receptor (alpha‐melanocyte stimulating hormone receptor)</italic> (<italic>MC1R</italic>) gene to analyze the relationship between <italic>MC1R</italic> polymorphism and the extended black variant in domestic ducks based on the <italic>extended black</italic> (<italic>E</italic>) and <italic>non‐extended black</italic> (<italic>e</italic>^{<italic>+</italic>}) allele hypothesis of the duck <italic>MC1R</italic> gene. Both c.52G&gt;A and c.376G&gt;A substitutions are highly associated with the duck extended black variant (<italic>P</italic> &lt; 0.01), but the novel c.52G&gt;A substitution is more of a fit for the allele hypothesis of the duck <italic>MC1R</italic> gene.</p> </abstract>
