- <abstract abstract-type="main" id="jbi12020-abs-0001"> <title>Abstract</title> <sec id="jbi12020-sec-0001" sec-type="section"> <title>Aim</title> <p>Our aim was to produce a dated phylogeny of <italic>Typhlatya</italic>, a stygobiont shrimp genus with an extremely disjunct localized distribution across the Mediterranean, the central Atlantic and eastern Pacific. Using phylogenetic analyses, we examine the role of dispersal and plate tectonics in determining its distribution.</p> </sec> <sec id="jbi12020-sec-0002" sec-type="section"> <title>Location</title> <p>Western Mediterranean, Ascension Island, Bermuda, Bahamas, Yucatán, Caribbean, Galápagos, Western Australia.</p> </sec> <sec id="jbi12020-sec-0003" sec-type="section"> <title>Methods</title> <p>Thirteen of the 17 species of <italic>Typhlatya</italic> were analysed, using <italic>Stygiocaris</italic>, <italic> Halocaridina</italic> and <italic>Antecaridina</italic> as outgroups. Fragments of three mitochondrial and three nuclear genes were combined into a data set of 2449 mitochondrial and 1374 nuclear base pairs.</p> </sec> <sec id="jbi12020-sec-0004" sec-type="section"> <title>Results</title> <p>Phylogenetic trees clearly showed <italic>Typhlatya</italic> to be paraphyletic, with the Galápagos species clustering with <italic>Antecaridina</italic>. We estimated an average age of 45 Myr (30.6–61.1 Myr) for the most recent common ancestor of <italic>Typhlatya</italic> + <italic>Stygiocaris</italic> + <italic>Antecaridina + Halocaridina</italic>. All <italic>Typhlatya</italic> (except <italic>Typhlatya galapagensis</italic>) + <italic>Stygiocaris</italic> derived from a node dated to 35.7 Ma (25.7–47.0 Ma), whereas the ancestor of all <italic>Typhlatya</italic> species (excluding <italic>T</italic>. <italic>monae</italic> and <italic>T</italic>. <italic>galapagensis</italic>) lived 30.7 Ma (21.9–40.4 Ma).</p> </sec> <sec id="jbi12020-sec-0005" sec-type="section"> <title>Main conclusions</title> <p> <italic>Typhlatya</italic> is paraphyletic and apparently absent from the eastern Pacific, with <italic>T</italic>. <italic>galapagensis</italic> clustering with <italic>Antecaridina</italic>. The remaining <italic>Typhlatya</italic> species form a robust monophyletic group with <italic>Stygiocaris</italic>, and both molecular and morphological evidence support the recognition of three sublineages: (1) <italic>Typhlatya</italic> s. str., Atlantic–Mediterranean, embracing all <italic>Typhlatya</italic> species minus <italic>T</italic>. <italic>monae</italic>; (2) <italic>Stygiocaris</italic>, limited to north‐western Australia; and (3) <italic>T</italic>. <italic>monae</italic> (Caribbean), for which a new genus could be erected. No congruence was found between temporal and geographical projections of cladogenetic events within <italic>Typhlatya</italic>/<italic>Stygiocaris</italic> and the major plate tectonic events underlying Tethyan history.</p> </sec> </abstract> … (more)
