- <abstract abstract-type="main" xml:lang="en" id="aogs12117-abs-0001"> <title>Abstract</title> <sec id="aogs12117-sec-0001" sec-type="section"> <title>Background</title> <p>Increasing birth rates have raised questions for policy makers and hospital management about the economic costs of childbirth.</p> </sec> <sec id="aogs12117-sec-0002" sec-type="section"> <title>Objective</title> <p>The purpose of this article is to identify and review all existing scientific studies in relation to the economic costs of alternative modes of childbirth delivery and to highlight deficiencies in the existing scientific research.</p> </sec> <sec id="aogs12117-sec-0003" sec-type="section"> <title>Method</title> <p>We searched Cochrane, Centre for Reviews and Dissemination, EconLit, the Excerpta Medica Database, the Health Economic Evaluations Database, MEDLINE and PubMed.</p> </sec> <sec id="aogs12117-sec-0004" sec-type="section"> <title>Results</title> <p>Thirty articles are included in this review.
