- <abstract abstract-type="main"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p>The genus <italic>Sphingonotus</italic> Fieber, 1853 is one of the most species‐rich grasshopper genera in the world. We studied the morphology of <italic>c</italic>. 1000 individuals from the Iberian Peninsula to review the taxonomy of the genus and its relatives. Moreover, we inferred a molecular phylogeny of the Iberian Sphingonotini based on two mitochondrial genes. The Iberian and north‐west African Sphingonotini comprise two recent radiations, within which the genetic relationships are not fully resolved. A multivariate morphometric analysis showed that <italic>S. azurescens</italic> (Rambur, 1838) and <italic>S. morini</italic> (Defaut, 2005) can be clearly discriminated, supporting their species status. Based upon the combined data, the genus <italic>Granada</italic> Koçak &amp; Kemal, 2008 is synonymized with <italic>Sphingonotus</italic> Fieber, 1853 and its type species re‐assigned to <italic><bold>Sphingonotus imitans</bold></italic> Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1882 <bold>comb. rev</bold>. The data also supported species rank for <italic><bold>Sphingonotus lusitanicus</bold></italic> Ebner, 1941 <bold>comb. rev.</bold> <italic>Oedipoda callosa</italic> Fieber, 1853 is considered as <italic>nomen dubium</italic>.
