- <abstract abstract-type="main" xml:lang="en" id="lam12044-abs-0001"> <title>Abstract</title> <p>The aim of this study was to report the antimicrobial resistance, the molecular mechanisms associated and the detection of virulence determinants within faecal <italic>Enterococcus</italic> spp. and <italic>Escherichia coli</italic> isolates of Iberian wolf. Enterococci (<italic>n </italic>=<italic> </italic>227) and <italic>E. coli</italic> (<italic>n </italic>=<italic> </italic>195) isolates were obtained from faecal samples of Iberian wolf (<italic>Canis lupus signatus</italic>). High rates of resistance were detected for tetracycline and erythromycin among the enterococci isolates, and most of resistant isolates harboured the <italic>tet</italic>(M) and/or <italic>tet</italic>(L) and <italic>erm</italic>(B) genes, respectively. The <italic>bla</italic><sub>TEM, </sub><italic>tet</italic>(A) and/or <italic>tet</italic>(B), and <italic>aadA</italic> or <italic>strA</italic>‐<italic>strB</italic> genes were detected among most ampicillin‐, tetracycline‐ or streptomycin‐resistant <italic>E. coli</italic> isolates, respectively. <italic>E. coli</italic> isolates were ascribed to phylogroups A (<italic>n </italic>=<italic> </italic>56), B1 (91), B2 (13) and D (35).
