- <abstract abstract-type="main" xml:lang="en" id="jeu12002-abs-0001"> <title>Abstract</title> <p>Few protistan grazers feed on toxic dinoflagellates, and low grazing pressure on toxic dinoflagellates allows these dinoflagellates to form red‐tide patches. We explored the feeding ecology of the newly described heterotrophic dinoflagellate <italic>Gyrodinium moestrupii</italic> when it fed on toxic strains of <italic>Alexandrium minutum</italic>, <italic> Alexandrium tamarense</italic>, and <italic>Karenia brevis</italic> and on nontoxic strains of <italic>A. tamarense</italic>, <italic> Prorocentrum minimum</italic>, and <italic>Scrippsiella trochoidea</italic>. Specific growth rates of <italic>G. moestrupii</italic> feeding on each of these dinoflagellates either increased continuously or became saturated with increasing mean prey concentration. The maximum specific growth rate of <italic>G. moestrupii</italic> feeding on toxic <italic>A. minutum</italic> (1.60/d) was higher than that when feeding on nontoxic <italic>S. trochoidea</italic> (1.50/d) or <italic>P. minimum</italic> (1.07/d). In addition, the maximum growth rate of <italic>G. moestrupii</italic> feeding on the toxic strain of <italic>A. tamarense</italic> (0.68/d) was similar to that when feeding on the nontoxic strain of <italic>A. tamarense</italic> (0.71/d).
