<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en" id="bjd12318-abs-0002"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p> <bold>What's already known about this topic?</bold> </p> <p> <list id="bjd12322-list-0001" list-type="bullet"> <list-item> <p>Psoriasis is an immune‐mediated disease involving both the innate and adaptive immune systems in genetically susceptible individuals.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>Microorganisms have been identified in the blood, skin and tonsils of patients with psoriasis, and beta‐haemolytic <italic>Streptococcus</italic> in the tonsils has been strongly linked to the precipitation of guttate psoriasis.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>Microbiota in the skin have been implicated in the immunopathogenesis of psoriasis.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> <p> <bold>What does this study add?</bold> </p> <p> <list id="bjd12322-list-0002" list-type="bullet"> <list-item> <p>This review summarizes the current knowledge of the location and identity of, and immune response to, microorganisms in psoriasis.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>Based on this information, the proposal that psoriasis is triggered by microorganisms in the skin via the innate and adaptive immune systems is presented.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </abstract>
