Abstract

<abstract abstract-type="main"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <sec id="bju12009-sec-0001" sec-type="section"> <title>Objective</title> <p> <list id="bju12009-list-0001" list-type="bullet"> <list-item> <p>To describe the epidemiology of genital injuries caused by trouser zips and to educate both consumers and the caregivers of patients who sustain such injuries.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </sec> <sec id="bju12009-sec-0002" sec-type="section"> <title>Patients and Methods</title> <p> <list id="bju12009-list-0002" list-type="bullet"> <list-item> <p>The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, a dataset validated to provide a probability sample of patients who present to emergency departments (EDs) in the USA with injuries, was analysed to characterize zip‐related genital injuries occurring between 2002 and 2010.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>A total of 523 cases were analysed to obtain national estimates.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </sec> <sec id="bju12009-sec-0003" sec-type="section"> <title>Results</title> <p> <list id="bju12009-list-0003" list-type="bullet"> <list-item> <p>Between 2002 and 2010, an estimated 17 616 patients presented to US EDs with trouser zip injuries to the genitals.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>The penis was almost always the only genital organ involved.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>Zip injuries represented nearly one‐fifth of all penile injuries.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>Amongst adults, zips were the most frequent cause of penile injuries.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>Annual zip‐related genital injury incidence remained stable over the study period.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </sec> <sec id="bju12009-sec-0004" sec-type="section"> <title>Conclusions</title> <p> <list id="bju12009-list-0004" list-type="bullet"> <list-item> <p>Zip‐related genital injuries affect both paediatric and adult cohorts.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>Practitioners should be familiar with various zip‐detachment strategies for these populations.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </sec> </abstract>
