- INTRODUCTION 1. The main issues in the field of entrepreneurship The aim of this chapter is twofold. First, it aims to offer an extensive review of entrepreneurship and of its main topics of research. Second, it aims to underline some issues related to them. Very often, in fact, entrepreneurship topics of research remain unsolved. Scholars cannot find a proper way to investigate these topics and so their contribution could seem of limited usefulness. The reference to other fields of research/knowledge could be useful to overcome this limit and proceed with entrepreneurial studies. 2. The birth of entrepreneurs through the lens of mythology This chapter is focused on the birth of entrepreneurs. The debate concerning if entrepreneurs are made or born is still ongoing and far from a solution. Of course this chapter is not in the position to find the solution, but by recalling some assumption rooted in the field of methodology it can help to shed some light. The birth of several Greek gods is recalled and analyzed to define if the context and/or individual characteristics are relevant. This offers several alternatives useful to explain the birth of entrepreneurs and it can help to frame this topic in a more detailed way. 3. Entrepreneurial tasks through the lens of philosophy Which aim do entrepreneurs pursue? Why is this aim so relevant? Why do entrepreneurs act like they do in order to achieve it? Entrepreneurship scholars have mainly tried to answer to the first questionINTRODUCTION 1. Entrepreneurship scholars have mainly tried to answer to the first question without paying much attention on the other ones. In point of fact, entrepreneurial tasks can change but the motivation at the basis of their action does not. The philosophical inquiry concerning human actions can be translated into the field of entrepreneurship and the means-end relationship can be reinterpreted from a new light. 4. Entrepreneurial decision-making through the lens of mathematics After clarifying the entrepreneurial task, it is very important to investigate the process of decision-making addressed by entrepreneurs. Particular attention is paid on the identification, selection, and exploitation of entrepreneurial opportunities. How do entrepreneurs proceed along these phases? The principles of mathematics can help us to understand it. Imaginary numbers can help, but factually entrepreneurs are more inclined to leverage Boolean algebra classifying options as 1 or 0, yes or no. 5. Entrepreneurial networks through the lens of chemistry Entrepreneurial networks have been largely investigated. However, entrepreneurship scholars have mainly paid attention on the kind of tie implemented between actors, whether strong or weak, and on the impact that can be generated. Actually, the kind of tie mostly depends on the entrepreneurs who – in most cases – are engaged in the implementation of their network for the first time. The chemistry between entrepreneurs and their stakeholders is of crucial importance to find the right partner. The reference to investigations about properties and reactions of substances (typical of chemistry) can be really helpful to add something new about entrepreneurial networks. 6. Entrepreneurial ecosystem through the lens of biology Entrepreneurial ecosystems are the most recent topic of research that entrepreneurship scholars are investigating. According to the principles of biology, the co-living with partners in a space is of crucial importance to survive. How can this concept be translated into entrepreneurship field of research? The way living organisms define and create natural ecosystems is carefully analyzed to speculate on the way entrepreneurs define and create entrepreneurial ecosystems. 7. Conclusions The aim of the proposed book is to support an interdisciplinary approach in reference to entrepreneurship. If the proposal of a standing alone theory is still far away, then it is not possible to refer to other fields of research/knowledge and try to explain and/or frame some issues concerning entrepreneurship. Several fields of research/knowledge need to be recalled and properly referred to specific aspects of entrepreneurship in order to clarify the main issues of entrepreneurship as much as possible and proceed with their investigation more smoothly. … (more)
